Mindfulness, Meditation & Breathwork

Scientifically-backed Methods of Developing Connection and Inner Peace

Mindfulness, to put it most simply, is being aware of what we're doing when we're doing it, or how we're feeling when we're having feelings. Studies show that mindfulness has a beneficial effect on anxiety, stress, depression, addictions, and a wide array of other psychological ailments. It makes us more adaptable, conscious, and less swayed by the suffering of the world.

At Clear Light Counseling, we will coach you on this important skill so that you can experience its transformative effect upon your life. We will also employ a variety of powerful breathing methods, both ancient and modern, to bring about this state. Breathwork exercises have the added benefits of being able to both calm or energize the body, depending on your needs.

Aspects of mindfulness and certain breathing techniques are used in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and other evidence-based treatments as well.

Five Element Qigong

Discover an ancient tradition of self-healing

Having studied under many skilled teachers in Taiwan and Thailand, your therapist and coach, Erik, offers additional classes in Five Element Qigong Flow, a truly ancient tradition of energy medicine and healing practiced throughout China and East Asia for millennia.

Qigong involves rhythmic flowing movements, simple stretches, deep breathing, and holding postures to manifest a calm mind and physical health. It has similarities with Tai Chi and has sometimes been described as a kind of "Chinese yoga." However, Qigong has traveled far beyond its original borders in China and is now practiced all over the world.

A description of the Five Elements and their application to mental health can be found below.

The Five Elements

The Five Element Theory is ancient in origin, and features prominently in Chinese medicine, acupuncture, Qigong, and East Asian traditional psychology and healing arts. Each element can describe energetic patterns of health or disease in the body. Each corresponds to an organ system and an energy channel, or meridian, in the body. There is also a psychological or spiritual component. When the elements are in balance, we can naturally express joy, kindness, courage, willpower, or inner peace, whereas out of balance elements result in negative emotions or behavior.

The Five Elements, along with their matching attributes, are described below. Five Element Theory is a major part of learning Qigong, and depending on the condition, openness, and willingness of each client, may be considered in clinical interventions as well, though this is optional.
